The wealthy Chrudim citizen Matej Mydlar, owner of a handsome renaissance home in Bretislavova Street, had several children, among whom his daughter Dorota stood out with her youthful charm and beauty. It was she with whom her cousin, Jan Mydlar, student of medicine in Prague, fell in love. She of course had no knowledge of her cousin's feelings for her, as she set about a relationship with a certain young aristocrat. She became pregnant but managed to successfully conclude a marriage with an old and homely widower, the miller Vanura. Soon after the marriage her child was stillborn. Shortly before concluding his studies Jan Mydlar learned that Dorota's husband Adam Vanura had been poisoned and that Dorota was being held along with three other women who aided her, as the perpetrator.

Despondent, he rushed to Chrudim, determined to do everything possible to save Dorota. He entered the service of the Chrudim executioner as a helper, at the price of becoming a social non-entity. In the torture chamber, to save Dorota from torture, he prevailed on her to fully confess to the crime. He then attempted to escape with her but the plan was foiled. Dorota's fate was fulfilled with her trial, sentence and a dreadful execution. As the story goes, Dorota's father, Matej Mydlar, did not live to see her end.
